Night flying
Today was the full moon. Tarry says that it’s nice to go night flying during this time because you can see more. I’m not so sure about this – I could actually see less. The fact that it was generally not so dark meant that runway lights weren’t so easily visible. Plus security regulations that caused the terminal at KCID to be lit like Christmas tree didn’t exactly help. But enough complaining. I did my first night lesson and although I’m not proud of half of my landings the plane is still usable
. My sense of height got confused (partially because of the night, partially because of size of KCID’s runways) and I had tendency to flare too high. I’ll work on this next time.
Interesting thing – not really related to the night itself – yesterday I had a nice crosswind (about 30 degrees to the runway @ 7 knots) and I had a chance to train cross wind landings. That was actually very nice. Due to long stabilized approaches I was able to precisely set the crab angle and watch the plane pointed to the left or right quite considerably going straight down the center line. I know it wasn’t even close to what you can see on some videos, but when you sit inside everything looks different. And I’m glad I had a chance to practice it.
Now it’s time to prepare for Saturday XC.
